Mumbai Metro Site Accident: A mobile crane, weighing over 400 tonnes, collapsed while lifting a beam at a Metro construction site in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla
Complex. Officials said the beam fell while being lifted up during an overnight construction work on Metro Line 2B near the Asian Heart Hospital junction. The mishap led to debris at the site, blocking the stretch and disrupting traffic during peak hour. However, no casualty or injuries have been reported. The crane was in the process of lifting a pre-cast beam when a mechanical failure caused it to topple over. The site is being handled by contractor J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd. Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed the mechanical failure as the cause of the mishap, reported The Times of India. Officials at Scene
Senior MMRDA officials rushed to the spot shortly after the crane fell to oversee the clearance operation and push for the affected stretch to be reopened to traffic as quickly as possible. In the meantime, traffic police stepped in to divert vehicular movement away from the junction to allow recovery work to proceed without obstruction.
To retrieve the toppled crane safely, authorities mobilised a larger 600-tonne crane for the job. MMRDA said its teams were working hard to reduce inconvenience to commuters and restore normal traffic flow at the earliest.
The agency also ordered additional safety checks across the construction site following the incident, signalling a broader review of on-site procedures in the wake of the accident.
Metro Line 2B is a key infrastructure project in Mumbai, and the collapse has drawn attention to safety standards at large-scale urban construction sites. Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control and that all necessary steps are being taken to clear the site and prevent any further disruption.
