It seems like the phrase 'straight out of myth’ came alive– after a photographer ended up spotting a white Iberian lynx in Spain. Yes, there exists a white Iberian lynx,
which is also the world’s first! A video of the big cat calmly sitting at a distance and ‘making eye contact’ with the photographer’s lens was shared online, which went viral for obvious reasons. What made the furry one’s uniqueness manifold was that not only are Iberian lynx rare, but this one- a white Iberian lynx- is leucistic. For those not aware, leucistic is a condition that is known for causing ‘lack of pigmentation in the fur’ among animals. Originally, Iberian lynx are mostly brown or beige-white in colour. As soon as the video went viral, netizens began to call it an animal ‘straight out of mythical and fictional stories’. Coming to the rare animal’s features, it is quite famous for its characteristic ‘beard’, which is basically some long fur around its mouth. They also have spots and ‘weigh about half as much as the Eurasian species’, as per the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The big cat has long legs and a short tail. Reportedly, the species almost went extinct in 2002, as fewer than 100 of them remained. However, after much effort, their population reached 2,000 by 2025.
