Mumbai: Mumbai is celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi on Monday, September 14, with the festival bringing a holiday for several institutions across the city.
Schools, colleges, banks and stock markets will remain closed, while essential services and public transport will continue to operate. For devotees and commuters, Mumbai's local trains and BEST buses will run as usual. Metro services have also been extended during the Ganeshotsav period to help people travel to and from celebrations.
What Is Open In Mumbai Today?
Metro Services: Maha Mumbai Metro has extended operating hours on Metro Lines 2A, 7, 9 and 2B from September 14 to 25. Services will continue until 12:30 am, instead of the usual 11 pm.
The last trains will leave at 12:30 am from Andheri West and Dahisar East on Line 2A, Gundavali and Kashigaon on Lines 7 and 9, and Maharashtra Nagar-Mandale and Chembur on Line 2B.
The metro network will also run 10 to 15 additional trips each day during the extended period.
Local Trains And BEST Buses: Mumbai's suburban local train services and BEST buses will remain operational. However, commuters may face heavier crowds and traffic diversions near major Ganpati celebration areas.
Hospitals: Hospitals and emergency medical services will continue to function. Emergency departments, ambulances and critical-care services will remain available. Patients with scheduled appointments or non-emergency procedures are advised to check with their hospitals about any changes.
What Is Closed In Mumbai Today?
Schools And Colleges: Schools and colleges across Maharashtra will remain closed on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi.Banks: Banks in Mumbai, including public and private-sector banks, will remain closed for the holiday. ATMs, online banking and digital payment services will continue to be available.
Stock Markets: The NSE and BSE will remain closed on Monday for Ganesh Chaturthi. There will be no regular trading session.
Courts: Courts across Mumbai will also remain closed, with regular proceedings and administrative work suspended for the holiday.
Commodity Market: The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed during its morning session from 9 am to 5 pm. Trading will resume at 5 pm for the evening session, which will continue until 11:30 pm, or up to 11:55 pm.
With large crowds expected at pandals and celebration venues, commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time, particularly in areas witnessing major Ganpati celebrations.
