Kolkata Weather Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata and 10 districts of South Bengal, warning of thunderstorms,
lightning and moderate rainfall over the next few hours. Cloudy skies prevailed across Kolkata and several parts of South Bengal since Friday morning, with intermittent rain expected throughout the day. Weather officials have forecast an increase in rainfall activity across the region from Saturday through Tuesday, bringing relief from the prevailing humid conditions.
Kolkata Weather Alert: Rainfall To Intensify Over Weekend
According to the forecast, Kolkata is likely to witness more frequent spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday are expected to remain wet, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 kmph during thunderstorm activity.The weather department has warned that districts including East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia face a higher risk of thunderstorms, lightning and heavy showers. Similar weather conditions are also expected in Hooghly, Purulia, Bankura and North 24 Parganas.
Kolkata Weather Alert: Heavy Rain Alert for North Bengal
While South Bengal braces for thunderstorms, North Bengal is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days. Authorities have warned of possible landslides in hilly areas, waterlogging in low-lying regions and a rise in river water levels.Heavy rainfall has been forecast for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri districts. Isolated pockets in these districts could receive extremely heavy rain. Uttar Dinajpur is also likely to witness heavy rainfall during the weekend.
Malda, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
Kolkata Weather Alert: Landslides Disrupt Connectivity
Continuous rainfall in North Bengal has already triggered landslides along National Highway 110 near Mahanadi in the Kurseong region. Several small and large landslides have been reported across the hills.The Balason River is flowing at a high level following overnight rainfall, while an under-construction bridge at Dudhia has reportedly suffered damage. An alternative temporary bridge connecting Siliguri and Mirik has also collapsed, disrupting traffic movement between the two towns.
Authorities have advised residents and travellers to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and follow local administration advisories.
