The Deadlock
The deadlock is not over whether Parliament should debate the NEET controversy. Both the government and the Opposition say they want a discussion. The disagreement is over the conditions under which that discussion should take place.
The Centre has repeatedly said it is ready to debate the issue "on any day, for any duration." According to the government, it accepted the Opposition's demand for a discussion, but the Opposition refused to proceed unless Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan first stepped down. What Does the Opposition Want?
The Opposition has maintained that accountability must come before discussion. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi laid down three conditions for the debate: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan must resign, the discussion should be held under Rule 193, allowing a structured debate on a matter of public importance and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must be present in the House during the discussion.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other Opposition leaders have argued that debating the issue without fixing responsibility would be meaningless.
What Is the Government Saying?
The government insists it never refused a debate. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has repeatedly said the Centre was willing to discuss the NEET controversy and accused the Opposition of disrupting Parliament instead of participating in the debate it had demanded. Rijiju also argued that refusing to discuss an issue affecting lakhs of students sends the "wrong signal" and maintained that Parliament is the appropriate forum to answer questions on the controversy.
Outside, the Protests Continue
Outside Parliament, protests have shown little sign of slowing down. Thousands of students and youth organisations have gathered at Delhi's Jantar Mantar demanding justice over the alleged paper leak and seeking the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. The demonstrations have also sparked controversy following allegations of police brutality during efforts to disperse protesters, adding another political flashpoint to the NEET row.
Where Things Stand Now
With neither side willing to compromise, Parliament's Monsoon Session has ended without any discussion on one of the country's biggest education controversies. The government says it was ready to debate the issue without preconditions. The Opposition says there can be no debate until the Education Minister is held accountable.
