What is the story about?
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met a delegation of tribal students from Maharashtra who were on a hunger strike. The Congress MP met the students in
Nashik.
Rahul Gandhi, in his X post, said that he met the protesting students to hear their demands. In his post, he wrote, "education is not a privilege—it is the right of every student in India." He stated that students from marginalised communities should not face neglect from the system and that they need the system's support and every possible assistance.
The tribal students residing in state-run government hostels in Maharashtra have been protesting against poor food quality, lack of sanitation, unsafe infrastructure, and strict age-limit caps. The protests gained momentum after reports revealed that female students returning from leave faced mandatory medical and pregnancy checks.
During the "Chhatron Ki Goonj" event in Pune, a student spoke directly on stage about the ongoing fast, following which the LoP had written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding immediate relief for students and the removal of these unjust rules. The strike was successfully concluded on August 29, when the Maharashtra government accepted the students' core demands, hence leading to the students calling off their hunger strike.
After the resolution, Rahul Gandhi traveled to Nashik on September 2, to address the concluding session of the Congress party's "Srujan" training camp.
