Chennai Rain: Chennai is currently experiencing heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department
(IMD) has issued an orange alert in Chennai along with several other districts in Tamil Nadu. The excessive rain has thrown normal life in the city out of balance, with the commuters facing transport issues and heavy traffic after stepping outside their homes. Schools in Chennai have also been shut down to ensure children’s safety. In one incident, a school bus was reportedly stuck in a pothole in heavy rain. In an official statement, the IMD shared an important update on the cyclonic event happening in the Bay of Bengal. It said, “Yesterday’s Low Pressure Area over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast now lies over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka at 0830 IST of today, the 17th November 2025”. It is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards during the next 24 hours. A Low Pressure Area is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around 22nd November 2025. Thereafter, it is very likely to move west-northwestwards and become more marked during the subsequent 48 hours,” the Met Office added.
