The United States is celebrating a milestone few generations witness. Two hundred and fifty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence,
cities across the country are hosting events to mark America's semiquincentennial, culminating in the Fourth of July celebrations on Friday. From Washington to Philadelphia, Los Angeles to Times Square, the programme stretches far beyond the traditional Independence Day festivities. Yet it is President Donald Trump who has emerged as the central figure in many of the headline events, using the anniversary to showcase what his administration has described as a renewed celebration of American history, patriotism and national identity. Congress has approved $150 million in federal funding for the anniversary, while Freedom 250, a public-private initiative established during Trump's presidency, has invested millions more into an expansive programme of events. Alongside the congressionally created America250 Commission, the organisation has planned ceremonies, exhibitions, concerts and large public gatherings that will continue through early July. The celebrations, however, have also generated debate, with critics arguing that some events blur the line between a national commemoration and a presidential showcase.
Trump's Independence Week Includes Roosevelt Library, Mount Rushmore And National Mall
Trump formally opened Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota, earlier this week, describing Roosevelt as one of the American leaders he has admired most. The ceremony formed part of a broader schedule leading into Independence Day and linked America's historical legacy with the country's 250th birthday celebrations.
His itinerary continues on 3 July, when he is expected to travel to Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota for the first major fireworks display at the monument in six years. The Black Hills landmark, featuring the carved faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, has become one of the signature venues of this year's anniversary programme. Trump is scheduled to address the gathering before returning to Washington for the national celebrations.
The centrepiece arrives on 4 July, when the President will deliver remarks on the National Mall before a large fireworks display closes the evening. The address will take place amid a severe heatwave affecting parts of the eastern United States, with authorities preparing for large crowds despite the extreme weather.
Fireworks, State Fair And Nationwide Celebrations
The National Mall has also become home to a 16-day State Fair, running from 25 June to 10 July, showcasing all 50 states, five inhabited territories and the District of Columbia. Organisers say the exhibition is designed to highlight America's regional diversity through cultural displays, exhibitions and public events.
Entertainment plans evolved after several musicians, including Martina McBride, The Commodores and Young MC, withdrew from scheduled performances. Trump subsequently announced that the musical line-up would be replaced by what he described on Truth Social as "the Greatest Rally, EVER!" Country singer Alexis Wilkins performed the US national anthem during one of the opening events.
The Independence Day finale is expected to feature one of the largest fireworks displays ever organised in the United States. Freedom 250 says more than 860,000 fireworks will be launched during a 40-minute "Salute to America" display over Washington, substantially exceeding the scale of a conventional Fourth of July show. According to organisers, the objective is to surpass the world record for the largest fireworks display.
Celebrations extend well beyond the capital.
Times Square will stage a special Independence Day ball drop marking midnight across each American time zone, while Philadelphia plans to bury a commemorative time capsule that will remain sealed until 2276, the nation's 500th anniversary. Los Angeles is hosting a large public concert expected to draw tens of thousands, and community events are planned in cities including Milwaukee.
Not every project linked to the anniversary has escaped controversy. Renovation work on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, undertaken as part of a broader beautification drive in Washington, attracted criticism after newly applied blue paint began peeling and algae formed on the water's surface. Trump defended the restoration, insisting it would solve longstanding maintenance problems despite legal challenges from preservation groups.
