New Delhi: In a major relief for air travellers, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has capped seat selection charges and directed airlines to provide at least
60% of seats free of cost. The directive, issued through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), aims to make air travel more affordable, transparent, and passenger-friendly. Under the new guidelines, a minimum of 60% of seats on every flight must be available for free selection, ensuring that passengers are not forced to pay extra for basic seating preferences. This comes amid growing concerns over airlines charging additional fees for preferred seats even after ticket booking or during web check-in. The DGCA has also instructed airlines to seat passengers booked under the same PNR together, preferably in adjacent seats, improving convenience for families and groups. In addition, carriers must introduce clear and transparent policies for the carriage of pets, sports equipment, and musical instruments, while adhering strictly to safety and operational norms. Airlines have been asked to prominently display passenger rights across their websites, mobile apps, booking platforms, and airport counters. Communication of these rights in regional languages has also been mandated to improve awareness and accessibility. India’s aviation sector has seen rapid growth in recent years, emerging as the world’s third-largest domestic market. With over five lakh passengers flying daily, the government has been pushing for more passenger-centric initiatives. These include affordable food options through UDAN Yatri Cafés, free Wi-Fi at airports, and “Flybrary” services offering access to books. The latest move is part of the government’s broader effort to enhance passenger experience, reduce grievances, and bring uniformity in airline practices across the country.
