An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Morigaon in Assam in the early hours of Monday, January 5, the National Centre for Seismology reported.
The tremor occurred at 4:17 am IST, with the epicentre at latitude 26.37°N and longitude 92.29°E, at a depth of 50 km. Tremors were felt in Morigaon, but no immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged.

Assam residents felt the tremors as they took to X, and shared their experience. One of the users wrote, "Earthquake just shooked everything in Assam..felt the tremors for 5 second continuous..Be safe."
Another user wrote, "Shook us out of sleep. Quake jolts Guwahati."
Officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage, though residents across parts of central Assam reported feeling mild to moderate tremors. Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored.
Earthquake Hits Tripura
Just a few hours before the earthquake hit Assam, an earthquake of 3.9 magnitude also hit Tripura's Gomati. The quake hit the region around 3:30 am on early hours of Monday.
The tremor occurred at 03:33 am (IST) at a depth of 54 kilometres. The epicentre was located at latitude 23.67 degrees north and longitude 91.50 degrees east.
