What is the story about?
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action against multiple food establishments in Mumbai after inspections found serious hygiene,
food handling and safety violations. The action was taken under the guidance of Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, IAS, with authorities ordering establishments to stop food-related operations during the suspension period. The establishments facing action include The Bombay Presidency Radio Club Limited in Colaba, Supreme Enterprise – Status Restaurant at Nariman Point, Khar Gymkhana in Khar West and Bajrang Sweet Mart in Santacruz West.
Bombay Presidency Radio Club Licence Suspended
Following an inspection on August 19, 2026, the FDA suspended the food licence of M/s The Bombay Presidency Radio Club Limited, Colaba, with immediate effect.
Officials found several serious violations, including an active fly infestation across kitchen areas, a dead cockroach and exposed cockroach traps near the utensil-washing section. Flaking ceiling plaster was also found directly above food preparation areas, creating a contamination risk.
Food items and utensils were reportedly kept directly on the floor, while washing powder and other chemicals were stored alongside food products. Officials also found unhygienic non-vegetarian refrigerators, improper thawing practices and personal items such as helmets and clothes stored with food.
Other concerns included unsealed kitchen doors, waste bins placed near cooking stoves and marks suggesting spitting inside the premises. The establishment recorded an overall 47 per cent non-compliance rate.
The licence was suspended under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The establishment has been directed to stop the purchase, sale and distribution of food during the suspension.
Status Restaurant Actioned After Consumer Complaint
The FDA also inspected M/s Supreme Enterprise – Status Restaurant at 208, Regent Chamber, Nariman Point, on August 20 following a consumer complaint.
The inspection found serious personal hygiene and sanitation failures. An employee was allegedly seen washing their face over clean food utensils, causing wastewater to splash onto them. Staff were also found working without proper protective equipment and in dirty clothing.
Officials reported water stagnation in food areas, heavy grease on equipment, corrosion and food waste accumulation. Drains lacked required grease and cockroach traps.
The restaurant also had no proper temperature monitoring records for cooking, refrigeration or hot and cold food storage. Raw and cooked food, as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian items, were not properly segregated, creating a risk of cross-contamination.
Its food licence No. 11518001000389 has been suspended with immediate effect until further orders.
Khar Gymkhana, Bajrang Sweet Mart Also Face Action
At Khar Gymkhana, inspectors found several food safety deficiencies, including poor storage facilities, lack of proper segregation between raw and prepared food, and between vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. Hot water for utensil washing was unavailable, while frozen food was not being thawed safely.
Officials also found that FIFO and FEFO methods were not being followed, food waste was not properly managed, equipment was not regularly calibrated and cleaning schedules were not being followed. The establishment’s registration certificate No. 21526006002279 was suspended.
Meanwhile, Bajrang Sweet Mart in Santacruz West, inspected on August 19, scored 40 out of 86 points, or 47 per cent, and was found non-compliant. Among the violations, the FSSAI licence was not displayed prominently.
The FDA has warned that establishments must comply with food safety rules and that violations during the suspension period can invite further legal action.
