Mumbai Weather: Mumbai woke up to a cool breeze on Sunday morning as temperatures dipped below 20 degrees Celsius for the first time this season, signalling
the arrival of winter. The minimum temperature was recorded at 19.6 degrees Celsius, more than two degrees below normal, bringing much-needed relief from the city’s usual humidity. Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that the suburban Santacruz observatory registered a minimum of 19.6 degrees Celsius - 2.3 degrees Celsius below the season’s average and a two-degree drop from Friday’s 21.2 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the Colaba coastal observatory recorded 22.4 degrees Celsius, which is 1.7 degrees Celsius below normal.
Weather Turns Cooler as Northerly Winds Flow In
According to Skymet Weather report, the temperature drop was caused by the arrival of cold northerly and north-easterly winds triggered by snowfall across northern India.“Several hills in north India have been experiencing snowfall. This has led to the arrival of northerly and north-easterly winds in the region.Being cold and dry, these winds have led to a drop in temperature across north-central India, as well as Maharashtra, including Mumbai,” he said. Palawat added that temperatures may fall further over the next few days unless a new weather system disrupts the current wind flow.
Coldest November Day in a Decade
While Sunday’s temperatures marked Mumbai’s first sub-20 degrees Celsius morning this season, daytime mercury levels touched 32.9 degrees Celsius in the island city division on Saturday. Earlier this month, the city experienced its coldest November day in at least a decade when unseasonal showers had pulled daytime temperatures down to 27 degrees Celsius.The IMD has forecast that minimum temperatures in Mumbai and neighbouring districts will hover between 18 degrees Celsius and 19 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs likely to range between 34 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
Mumbai Air Quality Declines as Temperatures Drop
Despite the pleasant chill, the cooler weather has brought a rise in air pollution levels. After a week of satisfactory air quality due to unseasonal rains, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) climbed to 104 on Sunday morning, placing it in the ‘moderate’ category. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed the worst AQI in Sewri, where levels touched 250, categorised as ‘poor’. Ozone emerged as one of the most prominent pollutants during the period.
