Ahead of its release, a few scenes from the upcoming film 'Daayra' have gone viral, with several social media users linking them to the 2019 Hyderabad
police encounter and the remark by then Cyberabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar that "law has done its duty." In December 2019, the Hyderabad police shot dead four men accused in a rape-and-murder case. As per reports at the time, the men were in police detention and had been taken back to the crime scene as part of the investigation. According to the police, the encounter followed an alleged attempt by the men to snatch the officers' weapons and escape. The action drew both support and criticism — some called it "justified," while others raised questions over "extrajudicial killings." Addressing the media then, Sajjanar, said: "Law has done its duty." That remark is now viral with netizens saying that one clip from 'Daayra' shows an officer using the same line, and many on Instagram have placed it beside Sajjanar's 2019 briefing. A few other scenes are also doing the rounds. Some are calling it a "real-to-reel" moment, while others have made edits combining the film footage with the old press clip.
'Daayra' is a crime thriller directed by Meghna Gulzar, releasing in theatres on September 18. Produced by Vineet Jain under Junglee Pictures along with Pen Studios, it stars Kareena Kapoor Khan as DCP Ajooni Kohli and Prithviraj Sukumaran as DCP Raman Kumar — two officers on opposite sides of the same case, in their first on-screen pairing. The film explores the conflict between legal due process and public demands for instant justice.
The makers have not linked the story to any single case. Meghna Gulzar has said 'Daayra' is "completely region neutral" and draws from several real incidents across India and is "not the success or the failure of a particular police force of a particular state."
