The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on stand-up comedian Samay Raina for mocking persons with disabilities in his show India's Got Latent, underscoring
that influencers and comedians must be mindful of the sensitivities. A bench of the top court directed Raina and four others, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Nishant Jagdsish Tanwar and Sonali Thakkar aka Sonali Aditya Desai, to tender an unconditional apology not only in court but also on their podcasts and YouTube channels. "Be careful when you make fun of others," the Court remarked, warning that today's ridicule of the disabled could tomorrow extend to women, children or senior citizens. "When you are commercialising speech, you cannot use a community and hurt their sentiments," the Court observed, stressing that the freedom of expression comes with duties and reasonable restrictions.
