What is the story about?
Amid rising temperatures and heatwave conditions across Bihar, district administrations have begun announcing summer breaks and restrictions on school
activities for younger students as a precautionary measure. Officials said the decisions have been taken to safeguard children from the adverse effects of extreme heat. In Vaishali district, District Magistrate Mrs. Varsha Singh has ordered the closure of all government and private schools up to Class 8 from May 25 to May 31, 2026. The order also applies to pre-schools and anganwadi centres operating in the district.
The administration, while issuing the directive, stated that the safety and health of children remain the top priority amid the prevailing heatwave conditions. Residents have also been advised to remain alert and take precautions against heatstroke and dehydration as temperatures continue to soar in the region.
Similarly, in Saran district, the District Magistrate has prohibited educational activities up to Class 8 in all educational institutions until May 27 due to the severe heatwave situation. The order has been issued as part of preventive measures to minimise children’s exposure to extreme daytime temperatures.
The announcements come at a time when several districts in Bihar are experiencing intense heat and humid weather conditions. Weather-related concerns have prompted district administrations to review school timings and, in some cases, temporarily suspend classes for younger students. Authorities believe children studying in primary and middle school are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses because of prolonged exposure to high temperatures during travel and outdoor activities.
In recent years, district magistrates in Bihar and several other states have increasingly stepped in to announce temporary school closures during periods of extreme weather, particularly heatwaves. Such decisions are usually taken after reviewing local weather forecasts, temperature trends, and advisories issued by meteorological authorities.
Schools and parents have also been advised to ensure that children remain hydrated and avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours. Health experts generally recommend consuming sufficient water, wearing light cotton clothing, and limiting outdoor activities to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
The latest orders from Vaishali and Saran indicate that local administrations are closely monitoring the weather situation and may continue to take further measures if heatwave conditions persist in the coming days.
