A car explosion near the Red Fort on Monday evening rocked the capital city, New Delhi. The blast, which occurred in a parked car, triggered a fire that
damaged several nearby vehicles. Following the incident, New Delhi has been placed on high alert, which may also cause some traffic disruptions. As of now, the Delhi Traffic Police has not issued any advisory for the city, but the roads leading to and out of the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk area are currently choked. As per reports, Delhi Metro running on the Chandni Chowk route is facing some delay and are also overcrowded. However, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is yet to issue a statement on the same.
What happened in Delhi?
According to Delhi Fire Services, an explosion took place near Gate No. 1 of the Lal Qila Metro Station, close to the Gauri Shankar Mandir, around 6:55 pm on Monday (November 10). Seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames, while a team from the Delhi Police Special Cell has arrived to investigate the incident. As of now, eight people have been confirmed dead, while 12 have been injured.
The anti-terror squad and Delhi Police Special Cell are present on the spot to assess the situation. Eyewitnesses claim that “never heard such a loud blast” and felt as if “everyone was going to die.”
As per media reports, the injured are being rushed to the LNJP hospital (Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital), which is located at the Maulana Azad Medical College Campus. Of the injured brought to the government hospital, eight have been confirmed dead, and others are being treated for injuries.
The blast comes hours after the recovery of around 360 kg of suspected ammonium nitrate and a cache of arms and ammunition from a Kashmiri doctor’s rented accommodation in Haryana’s Faridabad. Following the blast, Mumbai, Kolkata and Uttar Pradesh (UP) have also been put on high alert.
