The protest for a ‘free library’ by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar continues to attract students from across the country, who
have gathered to voice concerns over the growing challenges in accessing education. A library corner has been set up at the protest site by the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) of Delhi University. According to PTI, AISF member Devang Aniket said the organisation had set up a library at the protest site as part of its “Fight for Education with Education” initiative. “This library reflects the spirit of our protest. Literacy and awareness are the only ways to fight a corrupt education system,” he said, adding that the books have helped people better understand their civil rights, the country’s history and its present condition. Many of those present were aspirants preparing for competitive examinations, and several shared personal accounts of the difficulties they faced. From financial pressure to limited resources, students said these challenges often make it harder to compete on equal terms. Some participants also spoke about the mental strain caused by ongoing uncertainty around exams, including delays, cancellations, and policy changes in recent months. According to PTI, many students were seen carrying books and study materials, reflecting both their aspirations and the realities they are dealing with. The protest, which began earlier this week, remained peaceful on its third day, with students raising slogans and holding placards to highlight their demands. A common concern among participants was the need for a more transparent and supportive system that responds to student issues in a timely manner. The resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was one of the main slogans and participants shared their personal stories and their support for the movement. Three friends from Uttarakhand who travelled to Delhi without informing their parents said that ‘We told our parents that we were coming to Delhi for an interview. We stood for hours in a general coach to reach here and join the protest. We plan to stay until the protest ends’”. Protesters also pointed out that for those from modest backgrounds, the cost of preparation covering coaching, accommodation, and study material continues to be a major hurdle. They called for measures that could make opportunities more accessible. The protest has become more than a platform for demands, with students and supporters using it to voice their concerns and hopes for the education system. Among them is Babita Anjali, a 35-year-old liver cancer patient from Odisha, who arrived at the site with her 13-year-old son and medical equipment. “I am a mother. Every student in this country is like my own,” she said, adding that she has been staying at the protest site since arriving in Delhi on Saturday in support of the cause. (With inputs from PTI)
