Mumbai schools will remain open tomorrow, January 29, 2026. All government, private, and aided schools in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra were expected
to remain closed for three days following the death of Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party chief Ajit Pawar. However, the state government has clarified that the holiday was only for January 28. The minister lost his life in a plane accident today near Baramati. The state has announced a mourning period, and only all state offices will remain closed till January 30, but schools will function normally. Students are advised to be in touch with their respective schools for accurate updates on school reopening. The schools were closed today (Jan 28) following state holiday orders of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The official notice regarding the state holiday reads, "Shri. Ajit Ashatai Anantrao Pawar, Honourable Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra, passed away today, the 28th of January, 2026. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, state mourning shall be observed throughout Maharashtra for three days." "The Government of Maharashtra hereby declares the closure of all state government offices across the state following the sad demise of Shri Ajit Ashatai Anantrao Pawar, Honourable Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026." The notice further reads, "As per the instructions of the Government of Maharashtra, I am directed to request you to take necessary action accordingly and ensure that the national flag will be flown at half mast throughout the state of Maharashtra from 28.01.2026 to 30.01.2026 (both days inclusive) on all buildings where it is flown regularly. Repeat regularly, and there will be no official entertainment during this period."

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar lost his life morning after his aircraft crashed while attempting an emergency landing at Baramati airport. The crash also claimed the lives of two pilots and two members of Pawar’s security detail—one personal security officer and one attendant.
