Iran is not currently engaged in negotiations with the United States, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday, adding that Tehran
is instead holding discussions with Oman over a temporary safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters, Baghaei said the talks with Oman are focused on establishing a temporary maritime route through the strategic waterway, which has faced significant disruption amid the ongoing conflict in the region. However, he stressed that any agreement with Oman alone would not be enough to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying conditions would remain unchanged as long as what he described as US "aggression" continues. "The situation will remain the same while US aggression continues," Baghaei said. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy shipping lanes, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Any disruption to maritime traffic through the strait has raised concerns over global energy supplies and shipping security. Baghaei's comments come after US President Donald Trump recently announced that he had called off planned attacks on Iran, while continuing to signal that military action remains an option if diplomacy fails. The latest remarks indicate that Tehran is not currently pursuing direct talks with Washington, even as it seeks regional coordination with Oman over maritime navigation in the Gulf. Oman has traditionally acted as a mediator between Iran and Western countries and has frequently facilitated diplomatic contacts during periods of heightened regional tensions. However, Iranian officials maintain that broader security concerns must be addressed before normal shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz can resume.
