As counting for the July 30 Assembly bypolls progressed on Monday, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor widened his lead over BJP candidate Neeraj
Kumar Sinha in the high-stakes Bankipur contest, marking a significant challenge to the BJP's three-decade dominance in the constituency. According to Election Commission trends, Kishor had polled over 38,000 votes after 26 of the 31 rounds of counting, opening up a lead of nearly 16,000 votes over Sinha, who had secured around 26,000 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Kumari remained a distant third with nearly 9,000 votes. The Bankipur bypoll has emerged as the most closely watched contest, with all eyes on whether Kishor, making his electoral debut, can wrest the seat from the BJP, which has held the constituency continuously since 1995. The by-election was necessitated after former MLA and BJP national president Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April. Counting began at 8 am amid tight security. Besides Bankipur, votes are also being counted in Madhya Pradesh's Datia and Gujarat's Manjalpur Assembly constituencies. In Datia, the BJP appeared to be on the back foot, with Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh leading over BJP nominee Ashutosh Tiwari. Datia has long been regarded as a BJP bastion and was previously represented by former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra. Meanwhile, the BJP was comfortably ahead in Gujarat's Manjalpur seat, where its candidate Satish Patel led Congress's Bhikhabhai Rabari. The bypoll witnessed a direct contest between the BJP and the Congress.
