Krishna River: A flood-like situation is currently prevailing across Krsihna River basin near Belagavi in Karnataka due to the extreme rainfall, according
to media reports. Two district administrations have set up care centres and moved people to safer places because of flooding. The Almatti dam is releasing 2.5 lakh cusecs (a unit measuring water flow) of water. According to sources from Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Ltd, the amount of water flowing into the dam was 1.6 lakh cusecs, but the dam is letting out 2.5 lakh cusecs as of 6 pm on Wednesday. The city is flooded and roads are waterlogged due to heavy rain in Bengaluru. The BJP has criticised the Congress government for this situation, said TOI. There is a worry that Masuti village could be completely flooded if the dam increases its water release to 5 lakh cusecs. Continuous rainfall over the past few days has raised water levels in the Krishna, Ghataprabha, and Malaprabha rivers, causing flooding. The inflow at Narayanpur Dam is expected to rise, reaching 2.6 lakh cusecs soon, the media report added.
Karnataka Weather
Karnataka is currently experiencing heavy rainfall, with serious flooding-like situation developing in parts of the state after several days of heavy rain. Water levels in the Krishna River basin have risen dangerously, and the government has started moving people from low-lying areas to safer places. Relief camps have also been set up for those affected.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in several parts, including state capital - Bengaluru, warning of heavy rainfall. There’s also a risk of flash floods in Coastal Karnataka, especially in Uttara Kannada district, said media reports.
Because of the heavy rains, schools, Anganwadi centres, and colleges in Dharwad and nearby areas have been temporarily closed for safety.
