What is the story about?
Bengaluru: Thousands of passengers travelling to and from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday could face delays and last-mile connectivity
issues as airport taxi drivers, backed by Kannada organisations, have announced a protest against a newly introduced fine policy for vehicle movement at the airport. According to multiple reports, the agitation is likely to disrupt taxi services and slow traffic on key airport-bound routes, with the Sadahalli toll gate expected to be one of the worst-affected stretches during the protest.
Airport Taxi Pick-Ups May Be Disrupted
Taxi unions have warned that pick-up services from the airport may be suspended during protest hours, potentially leaving arriving passengers stranded, especially during peak travel slots. With taxis forming a major share of airport connectivity, the disruption is expected to hit passengers travelling towards the city and nearby districts the hardest.Bengaluru Airport: What Triggered the Protest
The protest is over a new fine policy introduced by Bengaluru airport authorities to ease congestion at pick-up and drop-off zones.Under the revised rules:
- Yellow board commercial vehicles can wait free of charge for up to eight minutes
- Waiting for 8–13 minutes attracts a fine of Rs 150
- Vehicles parked for 13–18 minutes are fined Rs 300
- Authorities can also tow vehicles violating parking norms
Taxi drivers argue that the time limits are unrealistic, particularly during flight delays and peak-hour congestion, and could result in repeated penalties even during genuine passenger pick-ups.
Traffic Delays Likely on Airport Routes
Traffic congestion is expected on airport-bound roads through the day, especially near the Sadahalli toll gate. Passengers have been advised to leave earlier than usual and keep track of live traffic updates.
Alternative Travel Options for Passengers
Passengers travelling to or from KIA can consider these alternatives to avoid disruption:
- BMTC Vayu Vajra Airport Buses: These buses operate from major hubs such as Majestic, Whitefield, Electronic City, Yelahanka and Hebbal, and remain the most reliable option during taxi disruptions.
- App-Based Cabs (Non-Airport Taxis): Availability may be limited, but some app-based services not directly linked to airport taxi unions may still operate.
- Private Vehicles: Those using personal cars should factor in extra travel time due to congestion near toll gates and terminal entry points.
- Metro + Bus Combination: Passengers can use Namma Metro up to available endpoints and switch to BMTC buses or private pick-ups for the final stretch.
Airport authorities are yet to issue a detailed advisory, but passengers are advised to monitor real-time updates and plan their travel carefully through the day.
