Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Monday (October 5) asked officials to explore ways to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) training to public-owned
schools from Class 6, with assistance from the Information Technology department and private partners. The directions were issued during a review meeting on the progress of his government’s 100-day programmes, recruitments and priority schemes. "AI training has already started for Class 9 students in government schools, and the chief minister asked officials to work toward extending it to students from Class 6," Shivakumar said. Tech giant Google expressed willingness to offer AI training in schools, and officials were directed to review the company’s initiatives in Telangana as part of this exercise, according to the CMO statement.
AI Training, KPS Development And Student Field Visits
CM Shivakumar further instructed officials to identify land for setting up an AI university in the state. Efforts are also being made to hire 956 teachers on an outsourcing basis, it said.
Examining the School Education Department, the CM directed officials to arrange visits for Class 9 and 11 students from 941 urban schools to progressive farmers' fields.
He said that students should be provided with overnight stay facilities in villages, such as community halls and hostels, and privately owned schools should also execute the programme. The programme should wrap up by December.
On the establishment of 1,000 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS), Shivakumar ordered officials to finish the preparations to lay the foundation stones by November 14.
The execution process has been streamlined by empowering deputy commissioners to ratify comprehensive project reports and tenders for KPS.
"The government also plans to develop 100 KPS schools through corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds, with companies having already shown interest in developing 60 schools."
