New Delhi: Low visibility caused by dense fog disrupted flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday, forcing the cancellation
of 126 flights, officials confirmed. A spokesperson for Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said adverse weather conditions severely affected aircraft movements during the early hours, leading to operational delays and cancellations. According to airport authorities, 49 departing flights and 77 arriving flights were cancelled due to poor visibility conditions. The situation added to travel woes for passengers already dealing with winter-related disruptions across north India. India’s largest airline, IndiGo, also reported significant impact on its operations. The carrier said it cancelled 110 flights across its network on Tuesday, largely due to knock-on effects of bad weather at the national capital’s airport. In a post on X, IndiGo said that winter fog, especially during early morning hours, often slows down flight movements in northern India.
The airline added that its teams were closely monitoring weather conditions and were making operational adjustments wherever possible to minimise inconvenience to passengers. IndiGo said efforts were being made to ensure that waiting times remained as comfortable as possible for affected travellers.
Delhi Weather Behind Flight Disruptions
Delhi has been witnessing a sharp dip in temperatures as winter tightens its grip, with dense fog becoming a recurring early-morning feature. Meteorological officials say calm winds and high moisture levels have contributed to poor visibility across the region, particularly during pre-dawn and morning hours.Over the past few days, visibility levels at the airport have frequently dropped below safe operational limits, affecting take-offs and landings despite advanced landing systems. Weather experts have warned that foggy conditions are likely to persist over the coming days, especially during early mornings and late nights.
Passengers travelling to or from Delhi have been advised to check flight status regularly, stay in touch with airlines, and allow extra time for airport travel. With winter fog expected to remain a challenge through December and January, aviation authorities and airlines are preparing for continued weather-related disruptions.
