What is the story about?
As more Americans turn to GLP-1 medications for weight loss and health improvement, approximately 1 in 8 adults in the U.S. report using these drugs, according
to a recent KFF survey. Since January, over 600,000 prescriptions for Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy have been issued, with early analyses indicating that over a third of users are new to these treatments, according to Truveta, a health care data firm.
Importance of Lifestyle Changes
Experts emphasize that while GLP-1 medications can aid in weight loss, they are not a standalone solution. Effective lifestyle changes—including a healthy diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and stress management—are essential to maximize the benefits of these drugs.Dr. Katherine Saunders, an expert in obesity medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, warns against the misconception that the prescription itself is sufficient treatment. She states, “The biggest mistake people make with GLP-1 medications is thinking the prescription is the treatment.”
A comprehensive review of nearly three dozen studies supports the notion that the combination of GLP-1 drugs and lifestyle modifications results in greater and more sustainable health improvements.
Focus on Overall Health
While obesity contributes significantly to chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, experts advocate for a broader focus on overall health rather than solely weight. Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrinologist at Harvard Medical School, emphasizes the importance of various health markers, stating, “Health is what you eat, how much you move your body, what is your blood sugar, what is your blood pressure, what is your cholesterol.”The mechanisms of GLP-1 drugs involve targeting hormones that regulate appetite and digestion, facilitating the adoption of healthier habits. Dr. Saunders notes that social media often misrepresents these medications as quick fixes, while obesity remains a complex and chronic condition requiring ongoing management.
Research Findings on GLP-1s and Lifestyle
Clinical trials involving anti-obesity medications like Wegovy and Zepbound consistently included structured lifestyle programs, which are recommended alongside new prescriptions. These combined efforts lead to significant weight loss and improved health outcomes.A study conducted in February involving over 98,000 U.S. military veterans revealed that those who adhered to six to eight healthy habits while using GLP-1 drugs experienced a 43% lower risk of severe cardiovascular events compared to those who did not use the medications and followed fewer healthy habits.
Dr. Frank Hu, a lead author from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, stated that lifestyle modifications can significantly enhance the benefits of modern medications.
Key Lifestyle Changes for GLP-1 Users
Experts recommend specific lifestyle changes to optimize the benefits of GLP-1 medications and mitigate potential side effects. Maintaining muscle mass is crucial; consuming 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal can help achieve this.Additionally, increasing fiber intake and drinking sufficient water—between 8 to 12 cups daily—are advised. Individuals experiencing side effects like heartburn should avoid fried and spicy foods and refrain from lying down after meals.
Engaging in 150 minutes of aerobic exercise weekly, along with strength training two to three times a week, is recommended for overall health improvement. Furthermore, ensuring adequate sleep—seven to nine hours per night—and managing stress are vital components of a healthy lifestyle.
Regular consultations with healthcare providers are also important to monitor weight loss progress and potential side effects, as noted by Dr. Dushay, who stated, “Someone really does need to keep track of: What is the pace of your weight loss? What are your side effects?”
