Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has proposed an unusual and attention-grabbing move: naming a key Hyderabad road after US President
Donald Trump. The decision, timed ahead of the upcoming ‘Telangana Rising Global Summit’, is being positioned as a branding strategy to push the state further onto the global stage. If approved, it would be the first known instance worldwide of a road being named after a sitting US President outside America.
‘Donald Trump Avenue’ Proposed Near US Consulate
The road running alongside Hyderabad’s US Consulate General is set to be designated “Donald Trump Avenue”, a move officials believe will attract global notice as the city prepares to host international delegates for the summit. The chief minister’s naming initiative extends beyond political icons. Reddy plans to honour leading global technology companies to highlight Hyderabad’s rise as a major tech hub.
Google, Microsoft, Wipro Among Names Under Consideration
As part of the state’s push to showcase its innovation ecosystem, several major roads and intersections may soon carry the names of global tech giants:- Google Street
- Microsoft Road
- Wipro Junction
Officials say these names acknowledge the massive investment and presence of such companies in Hyderabad’s IT landscape.
The government has also cleared naming the 100-metre Greenfield Radial Road, from the Nehru Outer Ring Road at Raviryala to the proposed
Future City, after Padma Bhushan Ratan Tata. The nearby Raviryala interchange has already been christened the “Tata Interchange.”
Chief Minister Reddy said the naming spree was deliberate and aspirational. It serves “a dual purpose: a fitting tribute and an inspiration to commuters,” while also helping “catapult Hyderabad into a higher tier of global recognition.”
Political Opposition: ‘Rename Hyderabad Back to Bhagyanagar’
The move has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar accused the government of chasing trends rather than heritage. He posted on X, “If the Congress government is so eager to change names, they might as well start with something that actually has history and meaning.”
He further claimed that Revanth Reddy was renaming places after “whoever trends”, adding, “The only party actually stepping out, questioning the government, and taking up real people's issues through MahaDharna is the BJP.”
