The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has urged microfinance borrowers to adopt the National Pension System (NPS) on Friday, January
16, 2026, as a means of securing long-term retirement and financial stability. In collaboration with the West Bengal chapter of the Association of Microfinance Institutions (AMFI), PFRDA conducted an awareness workshop to sensitise microfinance borrowers about the importance of retirement planning, a statement said. During the workshop, PFRDA officials highlighted the structure, features, and benefits of the NPS through presentations, stressing its suitability for individuals in the informal sector. The programme was attended by AFMI-WB chairman and Arohan Financial Services MD, Manoj Nambiar, and PFRDA general manager Ismail Salam. AMFI-WB said that the initiative was designed to empower microfinance borrowers with knowledge and tools to plan for their post-retirement needs. It also stated that pension agents will be deployed to assist borrowers and explain the nuances of enrolling in and contributing to the scheme. What Is PFRDA? PFRDA is India’s apex body for the pension sector. It was established to promote, develop, and regulate organised pension funds to primarily oversee the NPS, ensuring financial security for old age. Established as an interim body in 2003, the PFRDA Act was enacted in 2013, making it a statutory body. Operating under the Ministry of Finance, the PFRDA sets guidelines for pension funds, manages the NPS for government and voluntary subscribers, protecting their interests. Who Are Microfinance Borrowers? Individuals, often women, small business owners, or rural poor who cannot access traditional banking but have access to small loans (Microloans) and other financial services (insurance and savings) from Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). They take these loans to fund income-generating activities. Microloans typically require no collateral and feature smaller, more frequent repayments. Also Read: Face ID For PF Accounts!
