What is the story about?
A Saraswati idol immersion turned tragic at the Yamuna Canal near the Delhi–Noida border, where a man went missing after entering the canal, prompting
an overnight rescue operation. According to reports, four young men had entered the water for the immersion on Saturday (January 24) evening, and one of them, Vikas, a resident of Harola, Sector 5, Noida, didn’t come out. Eyewitness Roshan Kumar said his brother Vikas went missing around 7.30 pm on Saturday after the incident.
East Delhi District Magistrate Amol Srivastava said authorities were alerted to the incident at around 8 pm, following which rescue efforts were immediately launched.
“Around 8 PM, the UP Police received a call about a drowning incident in the Yamuna Canal. A rescue operation has been underway since then. Around 8.30 PM, the NDRF was also called in. In addition, the UP SDRF and the Delhi DDMA teams are also conducting rescue operations here,” Srivastava said as quoted by ANI.
He added that preliminary information suggests five to six people had come to the spot for idol immersion, and one person may have slipped into the canal, though this is yet to be confirmed.
“This is the Yamuna Canal, which runs along the Delhi and UP border. The current seems quite strong,” the DM said.
Rescue operations are currently underway near the Chilla border, with multiple teams combing the canal.
