The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) gives Class 10 students a second opportunity to improve their performance through the second board exam,
but not clearing it comes with clear academic consequences. As per CBSE rules, students who appear in the second board examination and are unable to secure passing marks in required subjects are not granted another attempt in the same academic cycle. This means the second exam acts as the final opportunity within that session for students who were placed in the compartment category or chose to improve their scores. If a student does not clear the second board exam, they are marked as “unsuccessful” for the year. In such cases, the student cannot move forward to Class 11 in the same academic session and will have to repeat Class 10 in the next academic year. They will then be eligible to appear again in the main board examination in the following year. The final result is prepared by considering the better of the two scores between the main exam and the second board exam. However, this benefit is only applicable if the student meets the passing criteria in the second attempt. Students who were marked as “Essential Repeat” due to failing in three or more subjects in the main examination are generally not allowed to appear in the second board exam, as they are required to repeat the academic year directly. The second board exam system is designed to reduce academic pressure and provide students with a fair chance to improve their performance without waiting an entire year. However, CBSE has clearly defined limits to ensure academic discipline is maintained. In simple terms, the second board exam is a final improvement opportunity within the same year. Not clearing it means students must restart their Class 10 journey in the next academic session.
