Srinagar: Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Thursday took a veiled dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government over education reforms, the handling
of the recent NEET protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar and FIRs against protesters while appreciating the railway infrastructure. Wangchuk welcomed the introduction of a bill in Parliament aimed at improving examinations but stressed that reforms should extend beyond exams and focus on strengthening the education system as a whole. In a video message shared on his X account, the activist also urged the government to honour written assurances given to him and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). regarding protesters, including a commitment not to initiate legal action or file FIRs against participating students. He said that a cooperative environment was essential for building a stronger India.
Wangchuk's X post's caption reads, "Am proud of the Indian railways. Want to be proud of Indian (govt) promises too…"
Meanwhile, Wangchuk is on his way to Ladakh after getting discharged from a hospital following his hunger-strike over alleged irregularities in the NEET UG exam. He praised the Indian Railways during his journey, calling his first experience of travelling on the Vande Bharat Express from Delhi to Srinagar a “beautiful experience”.
Wangchuk also expressed pride in the Chenab Bridge, describing the infrastructure achievement as a symbol of India's progress.
The activist was discharged from Medanta Hospital on Monday after his health showed improvement following his 26-day hunger strike. Before leaving for Ladakh, he visited Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.
Wangchuk had joined the agitation led by the CJP against the alleged irregularities in the NEET UG exam on June 28 and remained on an indefinite fast for 26 days. He was forcibly shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18, where he said he felt like he was being kept in detention.
The CJP withdrew its protest after Dharemendra Pradhan's resignation for the post of education minister.
