A Fragmented Political Contest
The 2026 PMC election is being closely watched due to the split within the Nationalist Congress Party. Ajit Pawar’s NCP, which had aligned with the BJP-led Mahayuti earlier, is contesting separately, while Sharad Pawar’s faction is also in the fray, making the contest more complex and multi-cornered.
In the 2017 PMC elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 97 seats, followed by the undivided NCP with 39 seats, Shiv Sena with 10, and Congress with nine. The MNS had won two seats, while AIMIM secured one.
The last elected mayor of Pune was Murlidhar Mohol, currently Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, who served until November 2019. Since then, the civic body has remained without an elected council.
Counting continues under tight security at multiple centres across Pune. With results expected later today, all eyes remain on whether the BJP can convert its early momentum into a decisive mandate or whether rival parties can claw back ground in later rounds.
