Jabalpur, MP: Long known for its abundant iron ore, Jabalpur is now in the spotlight for a far more glittering reason. The Geological Survey of India (GSI)
has confirmed the presence of a significant gold reserve in the Mahgawan Keolari area of Sihora tehsil, a discovery poised to reshape the region’s economic and mining landscape. As per the report in Moneycontrol, the breakthrough follows an extensive exploration programme involving soil sampling and chemical analysis. Alongside the district’s established iron and manganese ore deposits, geologists have identified gold and copper reserves spread across an estimated 100 hectares. According to preliminary estimates, the gold deposits could run into lakhs of tonnes, positioning Jabalpur among India’s most mineral-rich districts. “The evidence is conclusive,” a senior official from the department said. “The chemical tests confirm substantial traces of gold, along with copper and other precious minerals. This could be one of the most important mineral discoveries in central India in recent years.” The find marks a strategic addition to Madhya Pradesh’s mining portfolio, which has seen notable activity in recent years. A similar gold discovery in neighbouring Katni district had previously drawn interest from both public and private mining companies. Industry analysts say the Jabalpur reserve could attract significant investment in extraction and processing infrastructure, generating employment and boosting regional revenues. The presence of copper and other metals further enhances the site’s commercial potential, creating opportunities for integrated mineral development. With GSI’s confirmation, attention will now turn to detailed feasibility studies, environmental clearances, and potential partnerships between state agencies and private sector players eager to capitalise on what could be one of the decade’s most lucrative mining projects in central India.
