Two back-to-back earthquakes struck northwestern Nepal on Wednesday, authorities said. However, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
According to the National Seismological Research Centre, the first tremor of magnitude 4.5 was recorded at 1:51 am (local time). The second quake, with a magnitude of 4.2, struck at 4:28 am (local time), with its epicentre also located around Kalai in Mugu district, the centre said. The shock was also felt in neighbouring districts of Dolpa and Jumla. However, there was no immediate report of any damage caused by the tremors. Nepal, situated in a seismically active zone, frequently experiences earthquakes. The region continues to be on alert, with authorities monitoring for any aftershocks or potential structural damage in the affected areas.
Nepal flood death toll reaches 1,399
This comes weeks after Nepal faced devastating floods. The death toll in Nepal flash floods climbed to 1,399 on Tuesday as more bodies were recovered from the eight affected districts, authorities said.
The flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal.
According to the latest data released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 364 bodies were recovered from Chitwan district, 232 from Nawalparasi East, 222 from Nawalparasi West, and 202 from Nuwakot.
Similarly, 189 bodies were recovered from Rasuwa, 78 from Gorkha, 72 from Dhading and 38 from Tanahun.
Two others died while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu.
The joint command of security personnel is continuing its search and rescue operations, with the number of missing people estimated to be 5,170.
A total of 13,742 people have been rescued so far, officials said.
