What is the story about?
Iran’s key oil export hub,Kharg Island, was reportedly struck on Tuesday, Iranian outlet Mehr News said, in what signals a sharp escalation in the ongoing
US-Iran conflict. Often referred to as Tehran’s “crown jewel” of oil infrastructure, the strategically crucial island is said to have been hit by multiple strikes, thrusting it into the spotlight of a month-long confrontation that has already rattled global energy markets. Why Kharg Island Matters
Situated in the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island handles close to 90% of Iran’s oil exports, making it the backbone of the country’s energy trade. Its significance lies in both its location and infrastructure—much of Iran’s coastline is too shallow for large oil tankers, leaving Kharg as the primary export gateway.
Positioned across from US military bases in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, the island is especially exposed in the event of escalation. Experts warn that any prolonged disruption here could severely hit Iran’s oil revenues and send shockwaves through global fuel markets.
Tensions have already rattled energy markets, particularly after Iran moved to shut the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil transit routes.
Trump’s Warning On Kharg Island
US President Donald Trump had earlier hinted at the possibility of targeting Kharg Island. In remarks to the Financial Times, he said, “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options.”
Any strike on the island is widely seen as a strategy to pressure Tehran by crippling its oil exports and reducing its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s ‘Final’ Ultimatum To Iran
Trump has repeatedly shifted deadlines for Iran to strike a deal or reopen the Strait of Hormuz, most recently pushing it from Monday to Tuesday. He warned that failure to comply would bring severe consequences, saying “hell will rain down.”
An earlier deadline of March 23 was extended multiple times as the president alternated between threats, delays, and claims that talks were progressing—sometimes within the same statement.
Iran has rejected the latest ceasefire proposal, according to state-run IRNA. Soon after, Trump issued a stark warning, suggesting Tuesday’s 8 p.m. EDT deadline was final.
“They’ll have no bridges. They’ll have no power plants. They’ll have no anything,” he said.
