Complaints of unscheduled blackouts, especially at night, have surged on social media, leaving many struggling without fans, coolers, or air conditioners in the peak summer heat. Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also raised the issue on X, writing: “In this severe 45-degree heat, power cuts are happening across Delhi. Delhiites are in distress. The lights go off anytime.”
While power distribution companies such as BSES are receiving multiple complaints daily, officials say efforts are underway to manage the growing electricity demand and maintain supply stability.
Delhi Heatwave and Rising Night Temperatures Increasing Electricity Demand
Delhi NCR is currently experiencing one of its harshest heat spells of the year, with daytime temperatures ranging between 42°C and 45°C. According to weather experts, unusually high nighttime temperatures are making conditions even more difficult for residents.Minimum temperatures in many areas have remained above normal, often staying close to 30°C. Experts say this is largely due to the urban heat island effect, where concrete buildings, roads, and limited green cover absorb heat during the day and slowly release it at night.
As a result, air conditioners, coolers, and fans continue running for longer hours, pushing electricity demand to record levels. Delhi’s power demand recently touched 7,776 MW, the highest so far in 2026, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre.
Officials say when millions of households use cooling appliances simultaneously, transformers and local distribution systems come under immense pressure, increasing the chances of outages and technical faults.
Delhi Power Cut: Areas Affected and What Residents Should Know
Apart from unexpected outages, power companies BSES and Tata Power DDL have also announced planned shutdowns in several areas for maintenance and network upgrades. Localities including Hauz Khas, Janakpuri, Rohini, Shalimar Bagh, Narela, and Model Town are among the areas expected to face temporary interruptions.Officials say these scheduled cuts are necessary for transformer replacement, technical repairs, and improving long term reliability of the power network. However, with temperatures expected to touch nearly 46°C, many residents fear more discomfort in the coming days.
Experts believe climate change and rapid urbanisation are making heatwaves more intense every year, putting additional pressure on electricity infrastructure across major Indian cities. Residents have been advised to conserve electricity where possible, stay hydrated, and avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours.
