What is the story about?
Mumbai Water Cut: Several areas across Mumbai will be facing a significant water supply disruption in parts of South and Central Mumbai this week, according
to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Mumbai water cut will occur from 10 AM on April 16 to 4 AM on April 17, 2026, lasting for a total of 18 hours. Water supply will be disrupted for key pipeline upgrades to improve distribution from major reservoirs.
Why 18-Hour Water Cut Will Hit Mumbai?
This interruption is necessitated by essential infrastructure work, specifically the installation of two 1,500 mm diameter butterfly valves on the Sewree Tunnel-Bhandarwada Hill Reservoir pipeline. This upgrade aims to enhance the efficiency of water distribution from major reservoirs, including Bhandarwada Hill, Fosberry Hill, and Golanji Hill.
Areas Affected by Mumbai Water Cut
Several wards will experience either a complete shutdown or reduced water pressure during this period. The impacted areas include:
A Ward: Complete shutdown in areas such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, St George Hospital, and the Reserve Bank of India.
B Ward: Localities including Umarkhadi, Masjid Bunder, and parts of Jail Road will face disruptions.
C Ward: Areas like Bora Bazaar and Kalbadevi will also be affected.
E Ward: Residents in Nagpada, Byculla, and JJ Road can expect low water pressure.
F/South Ward: Key locations such as Sewri and Wadala (East) will see a complete shutdown.
Mumbai Water Cut: Advisory for Residents
Mumbai residents are strongly advised to store adequate water before the cut and to use it judiciously during the disruption. The BMC has also recommended boiling and filtering drinking water for the following four to five days after supply resumes to ensure safety.
While hospitals such as KEM Hospital, Tata Memorial Hospital, and Nair Hospital will continue to operate, they will do so under reduced water pressure. The BMC assures that efforts are in place to minimise inconvenience during this maintenance period.
