The Union Home Secretary, Govind Mohan, on Monday (June 15), examined the states’ readiness for the upcoming Re-NEET UG 2026 examination. Previously discarded
post-leak allegations, India’s largest medical entrance test had shattered the dreams of many. To review how prepared states are for the upcoming examination, Secretary Govind Mohan convened a meeting with the top officials of various public departments. He ascertained whether special emphasis is being put on students’ convenience, security arrangements, and the integrity of the examination process. With the re-test approaching, the Home Secretary instructed the concerned authorities that security protocols must be ‘strictly adhered to’ and that the exam should be conducted smoothly. The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Railway Board; Secretaries of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Department of Higher Education, and Department of Posts; Directors General of the CRPF, CISF, BCAS, and NTA; and senior officers from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the statement said, as per a news agency PTI. "States/UTs were requested to facilitate smooth travel of students. Chairman, Railway Board, assured full cooperation," it added. Earlier, NEET UG 2026, for offering admission to MBBS, BDS, and other medical courses, was held on May 3, 2026, across 551 Indian cities and 14 overseas centres. More than 22 lakh candidates turned up for the exam, which was declared ‘null’ on May 12 due to paper leak concerns. Upon detailed investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained paper setters, translators, and middlemen who had passed on examination material to aspirants for whopping amounts. The matter later reached the Supreme Court, where NTA and the Ex-ISRO Chief were questioned over recurring examination lapses and the execution of reforms suggested by the oversight committee headed by former ISRO chief Dr K. Radhakrishnan. When the apex court demanded accountability, asking, “We need to understand which individual is responsible. Accountability has to be fixed,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the NTA, assured the Court that the agency would ensure the re-examination is conducted in a safe, secure, and smooth manner.
