Mumbai: Security has been stepped up across Mumbai ahead of Independence Day, with railway stations and other crowded places under increased surveillance.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) has intensified security checks at major railway stations, with police teams and dog squads checking for suspicious bags and other possible threats. Stations with heavy passenger movement are being closely monitored, while checks for bags and weapons have also been increased. Railway protection and patrolling teams have been deployed at important stations along with personnel from the Anti-Terror Cell and Anti-Terrorism Branch. Around 56 Quick Response Team (QRT) personnel and 62 Railway Crime Prevention (RCP) personnel have also been deployed as part of the security arrangements. Terminal stations are receiving special attention, with additional checks and surveillance at entry and exit points. Dadar, Borivali and Andheri railway stations have been identified as key locations where security teams are maintaining a close watch. Dog squads are also carrying out checks at railway stations and other sensitive locations. Local police patrolling has been increased across the city. Special security arrangements have also been made for women passengers. From 9 am to 6 pm, police personnel will patrol women's coaches as part of the enhanced security measures. Around 3,400 police personnel have been deployed across Mumbai for Independence Day security. Around 1,600 Home Guards and 150 Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSF) personnel will also assist the police. Police teams have been directed to remain alert at crowded places and transport hubs and immediately respond to any suspicious movement, unattended baggage or other security concerns. GRP Commissioner Rakesh Kala Sagar said security arrangements have been strengthened across the railway network ahead of Independence Day. The heightened security measures will remain in place as the city prepares for the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
