In view of the prevailing heatwave conditions across Uttar Pradesh, the Basic Education Department has announced summer vacations in all schools operated
by all educational boards in the Lucknow district, starting from May 22, 2026. The decision has been taken keeping students’ safety and welfare in mind. “The Meteorological Department has issued advisories for the general public to protect themselves from the heat and heatwave. Certain schools in the district have not yet declared summer vacation, which is likely to affect the health of children,” the official notice states, urging the educational institutions to declare summer holidays amid the scorching heat. All concerned officers have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the order. The decision has been taken keeping students’ safety and health in mind. They are advised to avoid stepping out of their homes during the daylight to avoid the heatwave. In Delhi and several adjoining areas, schools have been directed to remain shut from May 11 to June 30, 2026. Government schools under Delhi’s Directorate of Education have already begun vacations, although remedial classes for Classes 9, 10 and 12 are being held in morning shifts.

This year, scientists are expecting a possible return of El Niño conditions, but a confirmation is yet to arrive. If it develops again, the nation could witness hotter temperatures, more heatwaves, and weaker monsoon rainfall in some regions.
