Delhi Rain: Delhi finally welcomed the southwest monsoon on July 2 (Thursday), with heavy rain bringing much-needed relief from the sweltering heat that
gripped the national capital over the past few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, while putting a few areas on red alert, forecasting intermittent rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds throughout the day. Rain lashed several parts of Delhi on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, leading to a noticeable dip in temperatures. The IMD has forecast the maximum temperature to remain between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to hover around 23 to 24 degrees Celsius. Along with moderate rainfall, strong winds reaching 50-60 kmph are likely during thunderstorms. IMD scientists said the southwest monsoon has now advanced over Delhi and adjoining regions, with rainfall activity expected to continue across parts of north India over the next few days.
Delhi Gets Its Latest Monsoon Onset in Five Years
The monsoon's arrival this year has been delayed in Delhi since 2021. According to IMD data, the southwest monsoon reached the capital on July 2, whereas it arrived on June 29 in 2025, June 28 in 2024, and June 25 in 2023.
In the past 25 years, Delhi has typically received the monsoon in the last week of June or the first week of July, with only a few years witnessing a later onset, including July 13 in 2021 and July 19 in 2002.
Thunderstorm Warning for Delhi
The weather department has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds, urging residents to remain cautious while travelling. Waterlogging, traffic congestion and temporary disruptions in low-lying areas are also likely during periods of intense rainfall.
Rain to Continue Till July 7
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms over Delhi till July 7, with cloudy skies expected to persist over the coming days. The rainfall is expected to provide sustained relief from the heat while improving air quality across the region.
Meanwhile, the IMD has also issued red alerts for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan, Goa and South Gujarat, as the southwest monsoon continues to strengthen across the country.
