The United States has issued fresh security warnings to Americans in several Middle Eastern countries, urging them to exercise “heightened vigilance” amid
rising regional tensions and warning of possible escalation, flight cancellations and airspace closures. The alerts, dated September 19, cover Americans in Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, Kuwait and Jordan. According to the warnings, the security environment across the Middle East remains “complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation”. Americans currently in the region were advised to remain alert to possible travel disruptions and changes to local security conditions. US warns of flight cancellations and airspace closures The US diplomatic missions warned that rising tensions could lead to flight cancellations, airspace closures and other disruptions affecting travellers across the region. Americans travelling to or from the Middle East were advised to monitor information from airports and airlines before making travel plans. Those outside the region were also urged to “seriously reconsider travel to and through the region” because of the potential for rapidly changing security conditions. The warnings specifically pointed to hostilities involving the Iranian-supported Houthis and Saudi Arabia, including attacks affecting civilian airports. “This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly,” the US alerts said. Warning of potential attacks on US interests The US also warned that American diplomatic facilities and other locations associated with the United States could face security threats. “Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including U.S. businesses and other institutions,” the alerts said. The warning extends beyond the Middle East, indicating that US interests and Americans in other parts of the world could also face potential threats linked to the regional tensions. US citizens were advised to remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings and follow instructions issued by local authorities. The State Department also urged Americans to monitor the latest country-specific security alerts and information concerning airport and airline operations. The warnings come as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East, with the US cautioning that the situation could change rapidly and lead to further military or security-related disruptions.
