Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, arrested in connection with the alleged “hurried cremation” of the RG Kar hospital doctor, was attacked by a mob outside a police
station in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Friday. Ghosh was being taken from Khardah Police Station to Barrackpore sub-divisional court when the crowd attacked him. People hit and kicked him and threw footwear, eggs and muck at him despite the presence of police and RAF personnel. Police officers put a helmet over Ghosh’s head to protect him from the attack. His white kurta was later seen covered with egg and muck stains. At Barrackpore court, another group shouted “chor, chor” as police took Ghosh to the court lock-up. A similar attack was reported against another accused, Sanjib Mukherjee, a former TMC councillor of Panihati municipality and a close aide of Ghosh. Mukherjee was also being taken to the court when people tried to attack him.

Mukherjee was allegedly present at the Panihati crematorium when the doctor’s body was taken there after the post-mortem. He was arrested on Thursday.
The third accused, former Panihati municipality chairman Somnath Dey, is still absconding, police said.
Why Were Nirmal Ghosh And Others Arrested?
The arrests followed a fresh complaint by the doctor’s father on Monday. The complaint was later converted into an FIR and alleged that Ghosh, who was the sitting Panihati MLA at the time, used his influence to force the “hurried cremation” of his daughter against the family’s wishes.
The complaint came a day after the chief minister directed the Barrackpore Police Commissioner to investigate the alleged hasty cremation.
The issue had remained outside the scope of the ongoing CBI investigation into the RG Kar rape-murder case.
The victim’s parents have alleged that the cremation was carried out unusually quickly to prevent the possibility of a second autopsy, which they believe could have revealed important evidence about the rape and murder.
BJP Questions Mamata Banerjee's Role
Reacting to the arrests, BJP minister Agnimitra Paul said investigators should examine whether the arrested leaders were involved in destroying evidence.
She also raised questions about the possible role of then chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
"Mamata Banerjee had said she was in constant touch with her party leaders and hospital authorities while she was returning from Jhargram by road on the day of the crime.
"She could have instructed them to stop the post-mortem from taking place after sundown and could have told them to wait for the next morning. She did not. Instead, she did everything to ensure the crime was covered up," Paul claimed.
“I feel if leaders like Nirmal Ghosh are arrested, the former CM should also be booked,” she added.
What Happened In The RG Kar Case?
The rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, triggered nationwide protests. Junior doctors at state-run hospitals also held a 42-day strike demanding a thorough investigation and better security.
Civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy was convicted of the rape and murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
However, the victim’s family has maintained that the larger conspiracy behind the crime has not been fully uncovered and that several people allegedly involved have not yet been brought to justice.
