Mumbai: In a bizarre incident, a 31-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a coconut hurled from a passing local train on the Bhayandar creek bridge
in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. The incident occurred on Saturday morning, when the victim, Sanjay Dattaram Bhoir, was on his way to work. Bhoir, a resident of Panju Island, was reportedly walking along the railway bridge to reach Naigaon. Due to inclement weather, the regular boat services from the island had been suspended, leaving many like him with no option but to take the risky route on foot along the railway tracks. As Bhoir walked across the Bhayandar creek bridge, a commuter aboard a local train, presumably performing a ritual immersion of Nirmalya, sacred floral offerings including coconuts, threw a coconut into the creek. Tragically, instead of landing in the water, the coconut struck Bhoir directly between his ear and eye with great force. Passersby rushed to help and Bhoir was immediately taken to a private hospital in Vasai. Due to the critical nature of his head trauma, he was soon transferred to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for further treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Bhoir succumbed to his injuries during the course of treatment. Local officials confirmed the sequence of events on Sunday and described the death as a shocking example of how traditional practices, when performed irresponsibly, can have fatal consequences. The police are currently investigating the incident, including reviewing CCTV footage and seeking witnesses who may help identify the person who threw the coconut. Authorities have also issued a reminder urging citizens to be mindful and cautious during religious rituals, especially in public spaces. (with PTI inputs)
