Nayomie Mendoza, a Mexican American business owner, reflects on the way Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the United States, characterized by festive food
and music. This year, Mendoza and other restaurant owners aim to emphasize the historical significance of the holiday, commemorating the Battle of Puebla and promoting a sense of community amidst rising anti-immigrant sentiments.
A Cultural Celebration
Mendoza, who owns Cuernavaca’s Grill in Los Angeles, plans to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with traditional mariachi music and authentic Mexican cuisine while highlighting the resilience of the Mexican community.She stated, “Just looking at how much they did with very little resources. It just showed resilience. So, on Cinco de Mayo we always make it a testament of our resilience.”
Reclaiming the Holiday
Sehila Mota Casper, director of Latinos in Heritage Conservation, notes that this year's celebrations reflect a shift towards honoring Mexican heritage rather than merely promoting stereotypical festivities.“These are just incredible moments of educating and knowledge sharing,” Mota Casper remarked. “The more we educate, the more knowledge we share, the better a community and people we become.”
Authenticity in Dining
According to the Census Bureau, Hispanic-owned firms constituted 8.4% of U.S. employers in 2024, with nearly 18% of restaurant businesses falling under this category.Raul Luis, owner of Birrieria Chalio, emphasizes that his restaurant will offer traditional Mexican dishes on Cinco de Mayo, aiming to create an authentic dining experience reflective of Mexican family traditions.
“It’s the ultimate opportunity for restaurants to take advantage of that moment and bring them in and entice them to authentic Mexican food,” Luis said.
Historical Significance of Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 victory of Mexican troops over French forces at the Battle of Puebla, a significant moment in Mexican history.In Mexico, reenactments of the battle occur annually, while in the U.S., the day has evolved into a celebration of Mexican American culture, featuring parades, food, and traditional dances.
Addressing Contemporary Challenges
Amidst a politically charged environment, Mendoza highlights the challenges faced by Latino communities, particularly in the restaurant industry, due to rising costs and negative stereotypes.Despite these challenges, Cuernavaca’s Grill will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, and Mendoza plans to incorporate a food and toy drive into the festivities.
“This is a testament of our resilience,” she asserted. “It’s a testament of our hard work. It is pride to our community and everything that we’ve accomplished.”
