The National Testing Agency (NTA) has once again clarified the examination pattern and marking scheme for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate
(NEET UG) 2026, providing aspirants with a clear overview of how the medical entrance examination will be structured. In a recent post on X, the agency highlighted that NEET UG 2026 follows a balanced subject structure across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, allowing candidates to approach the examination with greater clarity and confidence. The update comes as lakhs of students across the country continue their preparations for the upcoming NEET UG re-exam 2026. According to the details shared by NTA, the examination will consist of 180 questions carrying a total of 720 marks. The distribution of questions remains unchanged, with Physics and Chemistry receiving equal weightage, while Biology continues to account for half of the total marks.
NEET UG 2026 Exam Pattern and Marks Distribution
The NEET UG marking scheme under the prescribed pattern is as follows:
- Physics: 45 questions, 180 marks
- Chemistry: 45 questions, 180 marks
- Biology: 90 questions, 360 marks
The agency's infographic described the format as “One Fair Field,” underscoring the standardized structure that all candidates will face during the examination.
Marking Scheme for NEET UG 2026
NTA has also reiterated the scoring methodology that will be followed during the exam:
- +4 marks will be awarded for every correct answer.
- -1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
- 0 marks will be awarded for unanswered questions.
Another key point highlighted by the agency is that candidates will be permitted to carry their test booklet home after the examination, a practice aimed at promoting transparency and enabling students to review their responses after the test.
With the exam pattern and marking scheme now reaffirmed, aspirants are advised to focus on conceptual clarity, accuracy, and effective time management to maximize their performance in NEET UG 2026.
