A stand-up performance by Vir Das in the United States recently turned into an unexpected moment of real-life drama after a medical emergency occurred
in the audience. The comedian later shared the experience on Instagram, describing how the situation unfolded during his show in Seattle and how several audience members quickly stepped in to help. However, what captured the internet's attention in his recounting of the incident was his saying, “This is why you need immigrants.” In the video, Das explained that the show had been going exceptionally well and was close to wrapping up when the incident suddenly interrupted the performance. According to him, the night had the potential to be the highlight of the tour before events took an unexpected turn. He recalled, “Someone had a seizure at my show yesterday. This is 100% a true story.'' Das explained that the emergency occurred just a few minutes before the show was due to end. The performance was paused for nearly 20 minutes after an audience member experienced a seizure.
The situation was first noticed by a woman named Harleen, who was sitting next to the man. Das said that she spotted a warning alert on the person’s Apple Watch that indicated a possible seizure. The alert appeared as a fast-spinning blue arrow on the device, signalling that something might be wrong. Realising the seriousness of the situation, she asked her husband, Jaspal, to inform the comedian immediately.
Recalling the moment humorously, Das described how the message was relayed to him. “She was like, ‘Tell Veer something very specific is happening.’ And a typical husband, he was like, ‘Something is happening,’” Das said.
After the show was paused, Das asked the crowd if any doctors were present in the audience. He said, “Six hands go up.''
He further said, “Whatever this dude’s problem was… he could have had a seizure, he could have had a brain thing, he could have had an Achilles heel problem. There was an Indian doctor in there for him.''
Paramedics arrived shortly afterwards, and the situation was brought under control.
Das later reflected on the incident to make a broader point about the contributions of immigrants in the United States. In the video, he shared, “This is why you need immigrants. Paramedics were immigrants. The doctors were immigrants. And that was taken care of in under two minutes. He had six people attending to him.''
He ended the video by thanking Harleen, Jaspal and the audience in Seattle, while also wishing the individual who suffered the seizure a quick recovery.
The video prompted numerous responses online, with many viewers appreciating the message he shared about the importance of immigrant communities.
One user wrote, “What an absolutely beautiful message @virdas especially at a time when America needs to hear it the most! Thank you times a million for this! - and yes I hope whoever it was in the audience that had a seizure is doing better today.”
