What is the story about?
In a major development, Kolkata's Haldia Dock Complex will be getting a floating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK)
has been granted a 30-year land and waterfront licence for the floating terminal to a consortium of Invenire Petrodyne Limited and Excelerate Global Operations LLC. The parties are scheduled to sign an agreement in the upcoming days. The consortium got the licence through competitive bidding, along with a rent commitment of Rs 24.4 crore plus royalty on land, the SMP official said. Here's all you need to know about floating terminal
Among 12 major ports in India, this will be the first FSRU project, according to the SMP official.
For the floating storage regasification unit (FSRU), or floating storage unit, around 10 acres of land and 15 acres of water area will be provided. Moreover, a land-based regasification facility of 1.5 million metric tons per annum (MMPTA) will also be allotted.
Notably, the terminal project can expand up to three MMTPA in line with the market demand.
The first phase of the project is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2027. While GAIL's gas pipeline to Haldia is likely to be commissioned by March 2026, it might further be used to carry the regasified natural gas across India.
The new terminal will play a major role amid the rising demand for natural gas in eastern India, specifically from industries, power plants, and gas distributors, which are looking for cleaner energy solutions.
Last month, the SMPK awarded a 343.58 crore public-private partnership (PPP) project to Ganges Bulk Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (GBTPL), aiming to improve cargo handling efficiency.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
