A real estate developer from Bhawanipore area in Kolkata has lodged a written complaint with Kolkata Police after allegedly receiving threatening extortion
calls from individuals claiming to be members of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang. According to the complaint, the realtor has allegedly received multiple threatening calls demanding money. According to the complaint, the callers identified themselves as being linked to the Bishnoi gang and threatened the developer with dire consequences if the extortion demand was not met. The developer, who is involved in real estate projects in South Kolkata area, approached Bhawanipore police station and formally reported the matter. Bhawanipore Police station has already registered an FIR and launched investigation into the case, including attempts to trace the numbers and identify the callers. This is not the first time the Lawrence Bishnoi gang’s name has been used for extortion in West Bengal. Earlier this year, police in Siliguri said a businessman had received a Rs 10 crore extortion threat allegedly in the name of the same gang. Police had also arrested three alleged Bishnoi gang members in Howrah, and during questioning, it emerged they had travelled through Sikkim and Siliguri before reaching Kolkata. Law enforcement agencies say extortionists often use VOIP or WhatsApp numbers with fake SIMs to make such calls. The Bishnoi gang has been linked to several extortion cases across Delhi, Mumbai and other states. Bhawanipore police station is now verifying the authenticity of the threat and have advised the complainant to remain cautious. As per police sources, no arrests have been made yet, investigation is underway.
