In view of an orange alert issued by the IMD for today, the Palghar district administration has announced the closure of educational institutions. All
medium schools and colleges have been ordered to remain shut on July 23, 2026, owing to predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with extremely heavy downpours at isolated places. The order applies to all anganwadis, government and private primary and secondary schools, Zilla Parishad schools, municipal schools, aided and unaided schools, all Ashram schools, all colleges, and educational institutions under the Commissionerate of Vocational Education and Training functioning across the district. "As per the weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department on Wednesday, 22.07.2026, a Red Alert was issued for Palghar district for heavy rain (Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places), and an Orange Alert has been issued for 23.07.2026. Heavy rainfall is currently occurring in Palghar district. Considering all the above observations, I am of the opinion that it is necessary to declare a holiday for all medium schools and colleges in the district on Thursday, 23.07.2026," the official notice states. However, all headmasters, teachers, and non-teaching staff have been asked to report to work during official hours to carry out disaster management duties as per the instructions of the local administration.
Are Thane and Mumbai Schools Closed Today?
As of now, the district administrators of Thane and Mumbai have not posted any updates on school closures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for both regions on July 23, 2026.
"Heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places. Occasional strong winds reaching 50-60 kmph gusting 70 kmph very likely," the weather bulletin said.
