Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected on Sunday, May 10, as the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party. Leaders
of the NDA are scheduled to meet the Assam Governor to stake a claim to form the government later on Sunday. Himanta Biswa Sarma will take the oath as the Chief Minister of Assam on May 12. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the ceremony as the chief guest. Apart from PM Modi, several union ministers, chief ministers and deputy CMs of BJP-ruled states, and representatives from industries are also expected to attend the function. The BJP-led NDA had swept to a third successive term in the state with a two-thirds majority in the assembly polls. The BJP secured 82 seats, while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) won 10 each, in the 126-member House. Assam BJP’s legislature party held a meeting on Sunday morning to elect its leader, who would also head the new government in the northeastern state. Union Minister J P Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were present at the meeting as central observers and co-observers. Himanta Biswa Sarma had on Wednesday tendered his resignation to the Governor, who asked him to continue as the head of the caretaker government. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Veterinary Field, Khanapara, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota said, as reported by PTI.
